It's in the daily newspaper "Ouest France" dated 21st May,
that we find out the name of Mylène Farmer's new single: Dégénération.
Thierry Suc also mentions here that the single is scheduled on the
radio as from the 19th June 2008.
On the following days, the news is relayed by some of the weekly
magazines ("Public", "Voici"...).
Thierry Suc, giving several interviews to different local
daily papers about the 2009 Tour tickets sale, never fails to remind
everybody about this incoming
Dégénération's day of 19th June.
Many fakes will get to be heard on the Internet.

June 07th, 2008 - The Cd Box cover and two short selections The website "musicme" is the
first one to offer Dégénération's CD
picture.
A totally exclusive image signed by Simon Hawk.
This
cover could be referring both to "Le Violon de Ingres" by Man Ray
(1924) and to the CD picture of "L'histoire d'une fée,
c'est...".

We can read the letters "IY'H", or more precisely "IY/H", which means
"With God's will" in Hebrew.
Here we are with yet another religious reference to add to
Mylène's work.
On
that day, the same website also offers two different parts of Dégénération
each of 30 seconds.
June
14th, 2008 - The unexpected Over the night from Friday 13th
to Saturday 14th, the website "ecompil" offers to (legally) download Dégénération
in its full length. The single will be available for
a couple of hours before being taken off. Both websites "universalmuic"
and "ecompil" will then be down ("work in progress") until Tuesday 17th
June.
This event brings out some interrogations.
Is this an intentional indiscretion in order to create a buzz ? The
answer seems to be no, given the much important lost in legal downloads
as a result.
It more probably is a simple mistake (maybe just a programing error)
from "universalmusic" and "ecompil" websites.
The whole situation sees the fans debating until the 19th.
Some of them, troubled by the unusual electro sound like of the single,
wonder whether this is a remix or the original version.
June 17th,
2008 - Martin Solveig is announced for a remix The
newspaper "Le Parisien - Aujourd'hui en France" announces a remix of
Dégénération by Martin Solveig (read the article).
June 19th,
2008 - D Day Right
before anyone else, "jiwa.fr" offers a listening of the single as from
midnight on its website (image1
- image2).
Over night, the single becomes available for download on all major
music Internet websites (virginmega, iTunes, musicme, fnacmusic, ecompil, universalmusic..)
The radio channels get to download the single on a dedicated platform
from 6:00 am.
A promotional CD single is also sent out (more details in supports)
NRJ airs the single from 7:30 am (the website "nrj.fr" gives an
important window to the single: home page, downloads page and
Mylène also appears in the background of every single page
of the music section.)
The radio talk show "Laissez-vous tenter" (culture news overview),
broadcast at 9:00 am on "RTL", mentions Mylène's new single
(listen below).
It is important to point out that the version broadcast on the radio
and available for download is the same than the one previously and
unexpectedly offered on "ecompil". It is the single's Radio Edit
version of 04'05.
June
20th, 2008 - Downloads: very good start On its first day, Dégénération
is the number one sale on those of these platforms
who get to measure their activity on a daily basis (virginmega, iTunes,
musicme).
On "musicme" website, Dégénération
is at the first place, with a number of listening ten time superior
compare to the single in second position that day !
The official French downloads chart (ifo/snep) offers a new first place
to Mylene. In only three days of running, Dégénération
is first before all the other singles with 4,998
downloads. Polydor will then precise that Mylène has
established a new record thanks to the sale of these first three days.
June 26th,
2008 - The video clip's trailer The
website "musique.sfr.fr" offers a first 22 seconds trailer of the video
clip from 0:01am.
Two other video trailers will be on line from 30th June.
Broadcast of the full length video clip is announced for the
10th July.
June 27th, 2008 - A remix by
Tomer G After
Martin Solveig, it is Tomer G's turn to work on a remix of
Dégénération.
A one minute part of "Tomer G Sexy Club Mix" can be heard on
the artist's "myspace". Very warm welcome by the fans.
July 01st,
2008 - Bruno Aveillan, director of the music video Here is
what Polydor announces in a statement:
"The first part is called
"Dégénération" and it is directed by
the talented Bruno Aveillan.
This video clip shot in Prague, is a proud addition to Farmer's
beginnings great period of cinema like videos. Mylène Farmer
plays here a character with exceptional powers... just like in her
musical career."
On 3rd July "Paris Match" publishes an article about the video clip
with exclusive images of the shooting signed by Claude Gassian (more
details in the music video
section).
July 10th, 2008 - The Music Video The
website "SFR Music" offers an exclusive screening of the full length
video clip at 12:45 am.
The fans rushing on to the website are about to find out a few seconds
later, that because of too many connections at the same time "lowering
the quality of the video document" the clip was to "temporarily go off
and come back on line later".
The clip will be available again shortly after. The websites "tf1.fr",
"universalmusic.fr" and "nrj.fr" will then offer the video clip in its
full length on their pages.
As for the TV, it is "NRJ Hits" channel who will first broadcast the
clip (from 3:45 pm to be precise). "Virgin 17" followed by the other TV
music channels will screen it later that evening or from the day after.
The SFR
Music website is the first to broadcast the full music video version at
12:45.
August 18th,
2008 - The supports Three different supports are
proposed: a CD Single, a Maxi CD Digipak in limited edition and a Maxi
Vinyl in limited edition.
During the week from 17th to 23rd August 2008, Dégénération
directly reaches the first place with 27,401 copies
sold.
It is the best start for a single in 2008.
It is also Mylène's fifth number one single, a record only
shared with Celine Dion in France until then.
The CD will finally get sold at around 80,000 copies, including
Internet downloads.
A very good score for a song judged to be so different from what
Mylène Farmer usually offers.
This single will have most of the fans quite surprised by the electro
sonority and by the unstructured aspect of it (no classic succession
verses/chorus). Some will even qualified this song as the UFO of the
album.
The single will only be heard on the radio on a few occasions, only
allowing it to reach the 51st place of the radio airplay
"yacast".
